Tamil Brahmans: The Making of a Middle-Class Caste (Chicago University Press, 2014)などの著作がある人類学者で、医療人類学、メディア人類学などを専門とされています。

Dr. Haripriya Narasimhan, Assistant Professor, Department of Liberal Arts, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, India

Stories from the small screen: An ethnographic study of the Hindi Television Soap Opera world

Television occupies a very important space in the mediascape of India, with nearly 167 million households owning one (TAM 2015). In particular, daily soap operas, known as serials, are watched by millions of people across the country, in various languages. Referred to disdainly as ‘saas-bahu’ (mother in law-daughter in law) stories for their focus on women and family conflicts, these serials are overlooked by social scientists, who tend to focus more on the film industry, especially Bollywood. This paper, based on fieldwork in Mumbai, among industry professionals, argues for a look at television as a site where tensions about an increasingly globalizing nation are articulated every evening, for months and years, in the public realm. It is more in the small screen of television that transformations in families, and gender dynamics are debated openly and more vibrantly, in India.
