趣旨
被差別集団を意味する「ダリト」の語は、マハーラーシュトラ州で活動したB.R.アンベードカル等によってインド全土で広く用いられるにいたった。独立後、留保政策によってダリトの多くが指定カーストに認定されると、この語はそれまでの社会・文化的な意味に加えてあたかも単一の利益集団であるかのように政治的な意味合いを獲得することになった。しかしながらアンベードカルの結党したインド共和党の分裂や近年の留保政策の行き詰まりは、ダリトを政治的な単一集団とみなすことの限界を示していると思われる。 ダリトと呼ばれる人々は，その信仰・慣習の形式や、社会･経済上の位置、政治・思想の動態などにおいてあまりにも多様であり、単一の概念として捉えきれるものではない。本セッションは、その内部に諸集団を包摂する「ダリト」という概念を再検討し、彼らの多様性について考えることで、これまでの「ダリト」像に修正を迫る。 ダリト研究は、アンベードカルを生んだマハーラーシュトラにおいて研究が蓄積され、我が国でも小谷、内藤らの先駆的な試みが存在する。本セッションではそれらに基づきつつ、この地域を専門とする諸分野の報告者が、下記の視点からダリトの多様性を検証する。 井田・小磯は13世紀以降にこの地で展開したワールカリー教団の聖者伝・宗教詩を扱い、帰依を中心とする民衆宗教におけるダリトの多様性について考察する。小川は、18-19世紀の中世マラーティー語を用いて、ダリト、特にマハールの頭とその他を比較し、彼らの多様性を歴史学の手法で検証する。足立は19世紀以降のマラーティー語刊行物を中心に当時のマハーラーシュトラにおけるカースト論とその戦略について社会思想史の観点から考察する。飯田は、マハールを自称するタマーシャーの踊り手への聞き取りを通じて、現在の社会・文化における「ダリトであること」の意味を考察する。

Abstract
This panel aims to reconsider the 19th century in the context of global history from Asian perspectives. Usually the 19th century was interpreted and presented as a“European-centered century”, dominated by the development of the British Empire and under the ‘Pax Britannica’. We try to, however, reconsider the historical dynamics of the 19th century from South Asian political-economy and experiences. We especially pay attention to more dynamic roles of Asian agency and an Asian initiative in the 19th century for the acceleration of economic globalization and mutual interdependence in the latter half of the 19th century.
First we will present broad macro-level reconsiderations on the 19th century development of economic globalization and modernization in South Asia, based on the (formal and informal) British Empire, in connection with mutual interactions of global, regional and local forces. We invite two prominent leading Indian historians to discuss economic aspects as well as political & social ones: And then, in the latter part of the panel, we consider the agricultural development in South India and its economic implication to local communities, as acase-study of indigenous positive responses to economic integration into the world economy. In order to evaluate South Indian case in comparative perspective, the development of regional trade in Dutch East Indies will be examined, based on original historical documents.

Abstract
The aim of this panel is to discuss how the life of different groups of people in urban Gujarat changed in recent years while various institutional reforms anddevelopment projects were introduced by the state government. Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat since 2001, repeatedly advocated economic development, goodgovernance and the fight against terrorism, and proposed many policies and projects in relation to these ideas. Development is one of the key concepts for Modi’s government to stress its achievements and to invoke a sense of pride in Gujarat. The term ‘VibrantGujarat’, which is the name of an investors’ summit organized by the state government, is now known widely in and outside Gujarat. However, there are also critics who strongly disagree with this representation of Gujarat. They express skeptical views about what this ‘development’ in fact has brought to Gujarati society. They point out the lack of government efforts to tackle the problems of poverty, caste discrimination, education and health, which led to the expansion of economic and social inequality. With these different views on ‘Gujaratdevelopment’ in mind, this panel examines how different sections of people in urbanareas understand ‘development’ and what influence the state policies and projects foreconomic growth had on their everyday lives. It also tries to examine how their ideas of politics and society changed in this process. Among five papers in this panel, three look at ‘marginalized’ groups in society: street vendors, hijras and the poor. The other two focus on the urban middle class by analyzing recent development in media and higher education.

趣旨
南アジアの政治社会変動は選挙を通して「可視化」される場合が多い。選挙では、政治や経済のさまざまな動きが表面化するだけでなく、選挙を「劇場」としてみた場合、ポピュリスティックな「文化」現象が演じられ、その有様はメディア媒体を通して、人々の注目を集め、その認識を新たにする。すなわち、選挙は単に公式な政治参加や政党選択ということだけでなく、社会に底流する様々な文化や社会現象を巻き上げ、顕在化・可視化するプロセスである。そして、顕在化・可視化されるものを深く分析することは、社会変動の様相の理解を深める絶好の機会となる。例えば、本年インドで行われた第16次下院選挙は、強いインドを標榜するインド人民党のナレンドラ・モディのウェーヴ選挙となり北部、西部を席巻した。また、昨年行われたパキスタンの連邦下院選挙ではパキスタン史上はじめて民政下で選挙が行われた。このような諸現象を分析することは、変動してやまない社会の底流を理解する大きな手がかりとなるであろう。この共通論題ではインドを中心として南アジアの長期的な政治社会変動を、選挙というレンズを通して、政治学、歴史学、文化人類学、経済学などの学際的なアプローチを通して検討する。
