Regulation of the Japanese Association for South Asian Studies

Article I. Name
This Association shall be called the “Japanese Association for South Asian Studies (JASAS).”

Article II. Objectives
The Association promotes and disseminates academic research on South Asia within the framework of area studies.

Article III. Activities
In order to accomplish the abovementioned objectives, the Association will conduct the following activities:
i. Organize lectures;
ii. Publish association journal(s);
iii. Exchange of scholarly information among the association members and scholarly contacts concerned with South Asia, whether in Japan or abroad;
iv. Promote other activities deemed necessary to further the Association’s objectives.

Article IV. Secretariat
The Secretariat will be formed within a university or research institute through an approval of the General Meeting.

Article V. Membership
Section 1: Any individual who supports the objectives and activities of the Association and pays the required dues to the Association. All applications are subject to approval by the Association’s Board of Directors. (Hereinafter referred to as members)

Section 2: Members shall be exempt from payment of membership fees while undertaking a leave-of-absence from the Association. All members are subject to be approved by the Board of Executive Directors for the leave-of-absence or the return.

Section 3: Any member who fails to pay membership dues for three consecutive years will be informed and removed from the Association’s rolls. Those who apply for readmission must pay the entire amount in arrears.

Article VI. Supporting member
Any individual or group who approves of and desires to support the objectives and activities of the Association and approved by the Association’s Board of Directors.

Article VII. General Meeting
The General Meeting composed of members, shall be convoked once a year.

Article VIII. Association Officers
The Association shall be managed by the following officers:
i. A President
ii. Executive Directors
iii. Directors (No more than forty)
iv. Two Auditors

Article IX. Appointment of Association Officers
Section 1: Directors shall be elected from among the Association’s members and be nominated by the Board of Directors.

Section 2: The Executive Directors will be elected from among the Association’s Directors.

Section 3: The President will be elected by the Board of Directors from Directors and members who have been appointed as Directors.

Section 4: The Auditors will be elected from among the Association’s members at the General Meeting.

Article X. Duties of the Association’s Officers
Section 1: The President shall represent the Association and supervise all its affairs.

Section 2: Executive Directors, acting as advisors to the President, shall administer the activities of the Association.

Section 3: The Directors shall administer the activities of the Association.

Section 4: The Auditors shall review the Association’s financial accounts.

Article XI. Terms of Office
Section 1: The President will serve terms of two years. This shall not preclude re-appointment. However, the President may serve not more than two consecutive terms.

Section 2: The Executive Directors will serve terms of two years. However, this shall not preclude re-appointment.

Section 3: Directors will serve terms of four years. Directors shall not be re-appointed for two consecutive terms.

Section 4: Auditors will serve terms of two years. Auditors shall not be re-appointed for two consecutive terms.

Article XII. The Board of Directors and the Board of Executive Directors
Section 1: The Board of Directors is composed of the President and Directors.

Section 2: The Board of Executive Directors is composed of the President, Executive Directors, the secretary general. The secretary general is appointed from among the Association’s members by the President. In order to facilitate the management of its affairs, the Association will set up necessary committees. Chairpersons of such committees and their deputies can attend the Board of Directors meetings as per need.

Article XIII. The Assistant
The President may nominate certain members as the Assistant in order to smoothen the daily affairs of the Association.

Article XIV. Amendment and Repeal of the General Rules
Section 1: Any amendment and repeal of the Association’s general rules will require a decision of at least two-thirds of the attendees at the General Meeting


Supplement
Section 1: When a vacancy occurs for a Board of Directors, the successor shall be appointed by the Board of Directors. Thus appointed Director shall remain in office during what remains of the term of the predecessor.

Section 2: Executive Directors
When the need arises, the supplement of Executive Director shall be appointed by the Board of Directors. Thus appointed Executive Director shall remain in office for the term determined by the Board of Directors.
